This week's SMOTW: The WPS, or Women's Professional Soccer.

Now, to be honest, this will be read as woman-bashing or women's-soccer-bashing, and that's not at all my intent. If they wanna play, and folks will pay to watch it, more power to them. No, this is about naming and outfitting your teams.

I watched about eight seconds of a game today between a team called Chicago Red Stars and a team called FC Sky Blue. In this game, Red Stars wore sky blue, while FC Sky Blue wore orange.

Huh?

Run that by me one more time?

I know, I know, Red Stars wear the flag of Chicago as their jersey, sky blue and white with four red stars on it. Not a bad kit, actually, and the name ties in nicely with clubs like Red Star Belgrade. But when FC Sky Blue isn't wearing sky blue, and their opponent IS, you have a very dumb name on your hands.

Never mind that the equally badly named FC Gold Pride, from the Bay Area, doesn't wear gold, but instead black. Not sure I'd be so proud if I were them.
